Indoor Air Quality According to the EPA, nearly 30 percent of our nation’s buildings suffer from indoor air quality problems. IAQ problems cost North America more than $100 billion each year in health care, absenteeism, lost production time, and lost revenue. Cleaning agents and microorganisms have been identified as contributors to the IAQ problem. With this in mind, a careful evaluation of the different methods used in the maintenance and cleaning of commercial carpeting can help facility managers make informed choices and avoid risks. Steam cleaning has been described previously. Shampoo and dry foam both use detergents (petrochemicals) that can leave a dirt attracting residue and can take up to 24 hours to dry depending upon the amount of water used to rinse the chemical from the carpeting. The logical answer would be a “dry” process.
